Finally I relax
the way everything slumps and settles as it burns
I retract
like white claws into a black cat’s paw
Disappearing
Peaceful hiding
Everyone living as they must, sparrow on a pizza crust, dove in dead ash tree near the Hamilton slag heaps
Now I’m not trying to get to cool with anyone, I’ve seen things freeze
Thaw with memory of Omi’s Tracel filled with light, my eyes squeezed tight still held in orange and warm
Holy revelation or alien abduction?
Like the bats at Blossom dive-bombing the string section the same two questions harass my brain:
What’s God so afraid of anyway?
How much does the CEO make?

New Moon
04:04
|
|||
Maybe I love this more than I should,
watching hyacinths unhood, too early, but I’ll take it
a kamikaze affidavit
Maybe I shouldn’t smile as I, closed eyes, step into sunshine where the forest is clear-cut for high-tension wires
But I can’t really fake it
Take it where I can get it
Even in a softly smoldering air, the invisible’s still there
New moon
Smile at how “algae bloom” sounds lovely
Lulled to sleep by the drone hum above me
Dream about endless greyfield vistas with aerosol skies
over rainbow-skinned pools there’ll still rise
New moon

Something out in the street woke me up
I’d fallen asleep thumb in Sologub, but climbed up off the carpeted floor, creaked down the staircase from heavy attic to the front door, and stepped out into late July heat, a couple years before 90 would start to feel eerie to me. See a strange shape sprawled out on the concrete. A voice from four-square front porch speaks, “Some kids throwing rocks killed the cat and took off.” He went in, grabbed a box, we pallbear, empty lot. Maybe three weeks fall, read and blue splash on, light plaster walls, hear commotion behind newsprint taped on windows cops crawl under, pre-dawn, my neighbor’s gone.
A scream out in the street woke me up
I’d zoned full out over cracked laptop. Avalanched out to our new block to find you battered for a grapefruit and six bucks, so I went and gave chase to a shadow, for what? What you’d lost was already gone, so I turned back to cloak you, broke through the halo of white faces going whiter, desire to ghost shows.
Feel your warm blood running through my fingers there…

Tanking for Zion
02:58
|
|||
Took a minute in a square of sunlight
rare in this long night
You know, purposefully slow
an archer drawing her bow
Moments of stone
Not waiting for the stick hit to move back into liquid
hid my tracks as I go
kid filling up my phone
had a couple of zones I had to tuck and roll outta
Not wasting a year tanking for Zion
Not wasting a year to slingshot oblivion

Spider on Moss
03:20
|
|||
I was at the gas station again, grabbing some distractions to take to a friend’s
a cycle I may celebrate, or hold shame about at the end, no guess
the mess is half the plan
I keep carrying this trash cause it’s to easy to knock over an empty can.
Pause and wonder at the dark trees looming powerfully over the lit BP canopy
and me
I’ll try
to offset the cost, to be lite
a spider on moss

Gravel Pit
07:01
|
|||
Right now I want to pull a few things down
leave crowns dented, new landscapes of rubble mountains
Let my rage saturate the ground
till the hill collapses into neutered mound
I know, it’s cold, and I’ll fold before the match is lit
Lately it’s hard just to hold all this messy shit
All hammer, no glove, no love and if I don’t quit
I’ll find myself alone in a gravel pit
Fresh horror, MH down in The Borderland
On the sidewalk call State with vibrating hands
Grinding teeth doesn’t constitute a meal
What kind of yield can I expect from a debris field?
I
want to squeeze
some of these
camels through
the eye
Turn them into noodles
Watch the blood spray across the parquet

The Staircase
04:22
|
|||
Do you remember the staircase? Of course you do
the crooked spine of my old house
the landing where I nearly kissed you
then later lied about
Do you remember the spiders that lived there?
Light sleepers in their private room
dreaming of plump moths and butterflies
and songs to spin along to
Songs about warm corners where the heat collects like wishes unspoken -
unnoticed and useless, unless stirred into some sort of action.
I love how it turned into an insect zoo
the way you intentionally let them in
and how those stairs seemed siblings to
your noisy and lopsided grin
Do you remember all the times that you barely kept from sending me down onto my ass?
when I like broken the rhythm of your heart and your footsteps with my misplaced laugh
like when you tripped on our quick descent, just like you said you wouldn’t
but the bannister caught you
when I couldn’t
